Brief history of the area

Kingswood  is a wealthy residential area on the North Downs in Surrey. Part of the London commuter belt, Kingswood is just to the east of the A217 separating it from Tadworth.

Archaeological finds in Lower Kingswood have revealed that early Stone Age man was active in our area as long as 350,000 years ago.

The grounds of Kingswood Warren were acquired by Thomas St Leger Alcock in 1835 and over the years the mansion was also the home of Henry Orme Bonsor MP and Joseph Rank, who had founded the milling empire bearing his name.

Kingswood Village has several independent shops. The High Street is dominated by the very popular Kingswood Arms, Waterhouse Café and Kingswood Railway Station.

Kingswood Warren is a battlemented gothic mansion to the south of the village, much enlarged in the early nineteenth century by the architect T.R. Knowles for its owner Thomas Alcock M.P. From 1948 until 2010 it was used to house the BBC's Research and Development department.

Did you know?

Kingswood is a favoured spot for sports lovers, boasting two renowned golf clubs: Kingswood Golf and Country Club on the Kingswood Estate and the adjacent Surrey Downs Golf Club.

The Kingswood Golf Club, established in the 1920s and crafted by the famed architect James Braid, is often hailed as 'Braid's finest parkland course in England.' The club features a hotel and is a sought-after wedding venue. The women's section is notably welcoming, offering weekly competitions for its members. Their Sunday carvery is especially beloved by the locals and tends to be exceptionally busy during bank holidays, so it's advisable to book in advance.
