Brief history of the area

Oxshott started off life as a poor hamlet of just over 200 people living off forestry, farming and keeping pigs. With the introduction of the railway, it grew to become one of the wealthiest villages in the country.

The railway allowed both day trippers and wealthy residents quickly to appreciate the area's great beauty. The following 30 years saw Oxshott expand to meet their demands and in doing so it acquired all the characteristics of a true English village.

The Crown Commissioners limited early housing development to handsome mansions suitable for the well-heeled. Danes Hill, Broom Hall and Bevendean are amongst the most notable.

The village is home to a pub, several estate agents, a number of small independent boutiques, a post office and an optician.

Did you know?

A great many of Oxshott's residential areas are on gated private roads. This, combined with the large and desirable properties that form much of the village's housing stock, contributes to Oxshott's status as the "most expensive village in England". The area has also been historically popular with well off American diplomats and their families due to the ACS International School in Cobham.

The proximity of the Chelsea Football Club training grounds at Stoke D'Abernon is also a factor: a number of professional sportsmen, including Didier Drogba, Sir Andy Murray, Jamie Redknapp and David Lloyd have settled in Oxshott for this reason.
