Brief history of the area
Sutton started life as part of Surrey and is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as having two churches and about 30 houses. Its location on the London to Brighton turnpike from 1755 led to the opening of coaching inns, spurring its growth as a village. With the expansion of the rail service, it grew into a town and in 1965 it became part of Greater London.
Sutton has the largest library in the borough, that is also home to Sutton College and the Civic Services, although these are rumoured to be moving. Like everything in life Sutton doesn’t stand still. It is also home to the world renowned Royal Marsden hospital, located near Belmont Train Station.
It is home to the very popular Sutton High School for Girls founded in 1818 by the then Girls' Public Day School Trust.
At the top of St Nicholas Way, next to the Civic Offices and Sutton Library, St Nicholas Church is the oldest of the three town centre churches which dominate the town centre. It is joined by the more modern Baptist Church and another more traditional gothic church.
Many of Sutton's notable historic residents are buried in the churchyard. The orphans' graves are marked by a memorial put up by the church's Sunday school children in 1921. A large World War II bomb landed on the churchyard in 1940. It destroyed several graves, but the church building itself remained intact.
