A Month for Heart Health
February is all about heart health, and there’s no better time to talk about the incredible work of the British Heart Foundation. This organisation is dedicated to funding life-saving research into heart and circulatory diseases, providing vital support for those affected.
At Right at Home, we believe that heart health is something everyone in our community should be aware of. It’s personal for us—not just for our clients, but for our staff as well. We want to spread awareness and encourage everyone to take care of their heart. After all, we only have one heart—let’s not break it!
Heart Health Fact
- Blood pressure is a key indicator of heart health. An optimal score is 120/80, while 140/90 is considered normal for most people. Higher readings can indicate that the arteries are not responding correctly to blood flow, increasing the risk of complications.
The Benefits of Walking for Heart Health
Walking is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to maintain heart health. Some benefits include:
✅ Improved cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and energy levels
✅ Helping to maintain a healthy weight
✅ Boosting mental health and reducing stress
A study by Northwestern Medicine found that any amount of walking can improve heart health and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in older adults. According to the British Heart Foundation, people over the age of 60 can improve their health by walking 6,000 to 10,000 steps a day. Even walking as little as 2,337 steps a day can reduce the risk of dying from heart disease.
Walking is not just about physical health—it’s also great for socialising! Joining a walking group can be a fantastic way to stay active while meeting others in your community.
Jo’s Story – Why This Cause Matters to Us
Jo, Registered Manager for Right at Home Sutton and Mid Surrey
“My name is Jo, and I have worked in the health industry for 31 years. I’ve always put others’ health needs before my own, but after suffering a heart attack at the end of last year, I’ve become more aware of my own well-being.
The British Heart Foundation has been an incredible source of support for me. After my hospital discharge, a cardiac nurse contacted me, listened to my concerns, and reassured me about my recovery. I have learned so much about leading a healthier lifestyle by reading BHF resources, including foods that lower cholesterol and cardiac exercise videos on their YouTube channel.
The British Heart Foundation funds over £100 million of life-saving research every year, and they support people when they need it most. Now, it’s our turn to support them. We can donate, fundraise, or volunteer our time to help continue their vital work.”
Stepping Up for a Great Cause
Throughout February, our team laced up their trainers and hit the pavement to contribute to this incredible cause. Whether it was a brisk walk, a long-distance run, or a gentle jog, every step we took was in support of those affected by heart conditions.
But we didn’t stop there—our efforts also extended to fundraising, and we’re proud to share that we raised an amazing £450 in total!
Tim, alongside another Managing Director at Right at Home, personally donated £100.
Online donations reached £350—a fantastic show of support from our community.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed, whether through donations, participation, or simply spreading the word. Your generosity and dedication help make a real impact.
