World Alzheimer’s Day: Understanding Alzheimer’s and the Importance of Support

On September 21st, we observed World Alzheimer’s Day, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. It’s a day to reflect on the importance of understanding the condition, its impact and how we can best support all those affected. Alzheimer’s disease is more than just memory loss; it’s a progressive, physical condition that impacts every aspect of a person’s life, as well as the lives of those closest to them.

What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative disease affecting the brain. Over time, nerve cells are damaged by the buildup of 'plaques' and 'tangles,' which disrupt communication between these cells. As a result, messages within the brain increasingly fail to travel as they should, leading to memory issues, confusion, and eventually, the death of brain cells.

The symptoms develop gradually, often over several years. In the early stages of the disease, people with Alzheimer’s might experience mild forgetfulness, difficulty finding the right words, or trouble solving everyday problems. As the disease progresses, confusion, personality changes, speech problems, and difficulties with decision-making become more pronounced.

Supporting Clients in Sutton & Mid-Surrey to Live Well with Alzheimer’s Disease

While there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, research is ongoing into medical treatments that may slow its progression and hopefully find a cure. Our charity partner, the Alzheimer’s Society, plays a key role in the raising of funds required for this research and supporting those suffering from the disease and their families.

At Right at Home Sutton & Mid-Surrey, we are committed to helping Clients with Alzheimer’s live well despite the challenges they face. All of our local CareGivers complete dementia-specific training as part of their induction, ensuring that they are equipped to provide compassionate, high-quality care. Our specialist CareGivers develop personalised care plans that manage symptoms and help maintain a better quality of life for our clients, while also offering much-needed support for their families.

Although Alzheimer’s typically starts with memory loss and difficulties with decision-making, as the disease progresses it often has a significant impact on the sufferer’s hobbies, social activities, mood and general wellbeing. Consequently, over time, increasingly intensive care is usually required. We support Clients at every stage of living with this disease, from initial one-hour-a-day care to 24-hour live-in care as the disease develops. With a tailored care plan, we seek to alleviate as many of the challenges as possible, allowing our clients to retain their independence and dignity as long as possible in the familiarity and comfort of their own homes.

Why Alzheimer’s Care is Important

Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t just affect those diagnosed—it has a profound impact on their loved ones. Family members often notice changes in mood, behaviour, and daily abilities, such as forgetting appointments or misplacing important items. Encouraging a loved one to consult their GP when these symptoms arise is the first step toward managing the disease.
