This Year's Events

Shifnal 10K Run

The inaugural Shifnal 10K run, happening on Sunday, 28th April, invites the community to rally together in support of over 350 runners. This event, with its start at the Town Square at 10 am, is more than a race; it's a celebration of fitness, perseverance, and community spirit. It's a fantastic opportunity for everyone, especially those under our care, to enjoy a day out, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and perhaps drawing inspiration from the participants' dedication and energy.

This event also epitomises the essence of exercise as a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle, highlighting the profound impact of consistent physical activity on mental health, cardiovascular resilience, and overall vitality. The Couch to 5K program, for example, with its gradual approach to building running stamina, mirrors the journey of some participants, showcasing that the path to fitness is accessible to all, irrespective of their starting point.


May Day Celebration

The May Day Celebration on Monday, 6th May, from 11 am to 5 pm at the Town Square, promises a delightful day of family fun, complete with entertainment and a variety of stalls. This event is a wonderful chance for individuals of all ages to engage with the community, enjoy the festivities, and experience the warmth and joy of shared celebrations. It's particularly beneficial for our clients, offering them a sense of inclusion and an opportunity for social interaction, which is crucial for emotional well-being.


Heritage Motorcycle & Cycle Day

On Saturday, 15th June, the Heritage Motorcycle & Cycle Day will take over the Town Square, showcasing the rich legacy of bicycle and motorcycle manufacturing in the region. This event is not just for enthusiasts but for anyone with a curiosity about the evolution of these vehicles.


 

 


Shifnal Open Gardens Weekend

Dates: Saturday and Sunday, July 6th & 7th

Join the Community in a delightful exploration through Shifnal’s most beautiful gardens! The Shifnal Open Gardens event features a captivating garden trail that includes 6 unique private gardens plus the special Millennium Sensory Garden. This event is not just a chance to admire the beautiful gardens but also a fantastic weekend outing for the whole family. Organised by the local charity, Shropshire Community Resource, this fundraising event supports vital community projects. Come and enjoy the horticultural highlights of Shifnal and contribute to a great cause.

Shifnal Carnival

The Shifnal Carnival, set for Saturday, 29th June at the Town Square, is a highlight of the community calendar, offering an array of attractions, performances, and activities suitable for all ages. Spring Plant Fair at Weston Park

Gardening enthusiasts will be delighted by the Spring Plant Fair on Sunday, 5th May, and Monday, 6th May, at Weston Park. This event is a haven for those passionate about horticulture, offering a chance to explore and purchase unique plants from specialised, family-run nurseries. It's an excellent opportunity to indulge in the love for gardening, fostering a sense of achievement and well-being through this therapeutic activity.


The Great British Dog Walk

The Great British Dog Walk, taking place on Sunday, 19th May at Weston Park, is an event that brings together dog lovers and their furry friends for a cause, transforming lives with every step. This event is especially beneficial for our clients, as it promotes physical activity, social interaction, and the undeniable therapeutic presence of dogs, enhancing overall well-being.


Shifnal History Tour/Event

Step back in time with us at the Shifnal History Tour/Event, a legacy event that brings to life the rich history of Shifnal. Organised by Shropshire Festivals and sponsored by Shifnal Town Council, this event invites you to a fascinating journey through the town's past. Local actors will bring history to life, telling captivating stories at various key locations around Shifnal. This event is perfect for history enthusiasts and especially welcoming to our elderly residents who wish to reconnect with their heritage and share it with younger generations.

Regular Groups & Events

Open Door Coffee Morning

Every Tuesday morning, the doors open for "Open Door," an event that transcends the typical coffee morning, transforming it into a vibrant community gathering. From 10am to 12 noon, attendees are welcomed to savour a cup of coffee or tea, engage in meaningful conversations, and forge new friendships. The sense of community is further enhanced by the regular attendees who contribute by helping with refreshments, kitchen tasks, and the setup and takedown process, embodying the spirit of teamwork.

The ambiance is enriched by a group of wandering minstrels who fill the church with their melodies, and they are always on the lookout for new instrumentalists to join their ranks. On the 4th Tuesday of each month, the gathering takes on a reflective tone with the Open Door Communion, providing a space for attendees to light candles for prayers of intercession and to remember the departed. Open Door stands as a testament to the power of community and the warmth of collective hospitality.

Walking Tennis - Shifnal Tennis Club

"Walking Tennis," a novel initiative is designed with inclusivity in mind. This program offers a fantastic way for those who are recovering from injuries, beginners, those returning to tennis the ability to have gentle exercise and social interaction. Walking Tennis provides a low-impact, sociable version of the game, making it accessible and enjoyable for participants of all ages and abilities.

Participants can enjoy the game at a leisurely pace, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for those concerned about the physical demands of traditional tennis.

The Club's Walking Tennis program lives by the motto "game sip match," highlighting the emphasis on the joy of participation, the pleasure of companionship, and the shared moments over a cup of tea. It's a wonderful opportunity for seniors to stay active, engage in a fun sport, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with being part of a community, all at no cost. The club provides all necessary equipment, so attendees only need to bring their enthusiasm.

Located next to the Shifnal Cricket Club on Priorslee Road, TF11 8DH, Shifnal Tennis Club is easily accessible and eagerly invites members of the local community to join in the fun.

Art Appreciation Group

The Art Appreciation group offers a welcoming environment for individuals passionate about exploring the vast and varied world of art. This vibrant community delves into art from every era and corner of the globe, making each session an educational journey. From engaging discussions on an alphabetical exploration of art to deep dives into different genres of paintings, members gain a richer understanding and appreciation of art.

In addition to insightful meetings, the group organises visits to renowned art galleries, where members can experience both permanent collections and special exhibitions first-hand. Highlights have included trips to see 'Picasso' at Tate Modern and 'John Rennie McIntosh' at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool, providing unique opportunities to view celebrated works up close.

The group prides itself on its informal and friendly atmosphere, where learning about art becomes an enjoyable and enriching experience. Those interested in deepening their knowledge of art or simply looking to share their passion with like-minded individuals are warmly invited to join.

Forget Me Not Tea

Sarah Thorpe hosts the Forget Me Not tea, a special gathering for individuals living with dementia and their carers. This event provides an opportunity to engage in activities and enjoy each other's company in a supportive atmosphere, complemented by tea and cake. The meetings take place at St Andrew’s church.

Sarah is committed to safeguarding and values the time spent during the Forget Me Not sessions, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.

Individuals are warmly invited to join the gathering, which is usually scheduled for the third Thursday of each month, at 2 pm. However, Sarah recommends confirming the date and time in advance.

Shifnal Library Digital Support 

Shifnal Library is offers a tailored program to enhance digital literacy among older residents, providing one-on-one sessions with skilled staff or volunteers. Over eight to ten weeks, participants learn essential digital skills, including internet navigation, email communication, ensuring online safety, engaging with social media, and managing digital documents and photos. This initiative helps equip individuals with the knowledge to confidently use technology in their daily lives.

The Carers Group offers a supportive space for individuals who dedicate their lives to caring for others. Meetings are held on the last Tuesday of every month from 2.30 to 4.30pm. This gathering is an excellent opportunity for carers to share experiences, access resources, and find comfort in a community that understands the challenges and rewards of caregiving.
