What is Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a physical condition that affects the brain. The nerve cells are disrupted by ‘plaques’ and ‘tangles’ that build up inside the brain. For people with Alzheimer’s, communication between the nerve cells changes and messages don’t travel around as well as they once would have, and eventually the brain cells begin to die.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive condition, meaning symptoms develop over several years. The most common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease include personality changes, difficult making decisions, confusion and problems with speech.

"My friend is a client of yours and I would like to take this time to say that your staff are very reliable, knowledgeable and treats my neighbour friend with dignity. It is a comfort knowing that they truly do care about their client and the office team are very nice and approachable. Answers all the question timely. I will highly recommend your company to others."

Supporting Clients in Twickenham and Richmond to live well with Alzheimer’s

Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. However, there is ongoing research into medical and drug treatments. Read about the research being undertaken by one of our charity partners: Alzheimer’s Society.

Right at Home Twickenham and Richmond continues to help Clients to live well with Alzheimer’s and dementia through quality care and support. All of our CareGivers in Twickenham and Richmond complete dementia-specific training as part of their induction programme. As a result, our specialist CareGivers know how to develop personalised care plans to manage and even help slow down the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s usually starts with memory loss, as well as losing the ability to find the right words, solve problems or make decisions. As the disease progresses and memory loss, communication skills and orientation gets worse, people with Alzheimer’s disease will need some level of care during their day to day lives. The level of care at home may start at just one hour a day, for reassurance. It can then eventually progress into 24-hour a day care as the disease develops.

Why is Alzheimer’s disease care important?

Alzheimer’s disease can impact a person’s mood, daily activities and hobbies. The condition can have a profound impact on daily life, making small tasks increasingly challenging. As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, sufferers may start to forget appointments or lose important items, like their keys or wallet. It’s important to keep an eye on any signals that the condition may be getting worse.

Alzheimer’s can cause difficulties not only for the person who has dementia but also for those close to them. If you recognise that a family member has developed symptoms or is finding tasks are more challenging, encourage them to consult their GP.

FAQs about our Alzheimer’s homecare in Twickenham and Richmond

What is the difference between dementia and Alzheimer's?

In short, Alzheimer’s is a singular type of dementia.

Dementia is not a specific disease itself, but rather a term used to describe a group of associated symptoms, including memory loss and difficulty with concentration.

Whereas Alzheimer’s disease is a singular medical condition that disrupts the brain’s nerve endings and how they communicate.

There are many stages of dementia with different symptoms associated with each. Those with Alzheimer’s will also experience various stages of the progressive disease.

At Right at Home Twickenham and Richmond, we offer a range of support services for people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Please get in touch with us to find out more information.

How long does each stage of Alzheimer's last?

There is no definitive time frame for how long it will take to progress between each stage of Alzheimer’s disease. The rate of progression depends on the person and their own medical situation.

However, as the disease is fairly common, there is an average for how long each stage lasts:

Stage of Alzheimer's

Average Length of Time

Early Stage (Mild)

2 - 4 Years

Middle Stage (Moderate)

2 - 10 Years

Late Stage (Severe)

1 - 3 Years

If you are unsure what to expect for each stage of Alzheimer’s, talk to your GP or a healthcare professional for advice.
