Keeping Clients active and mentally stimulated during isolation
Published: 01/05/2020
As we come towards the end of our sixth week in lockdown, our National People and Brand Development Manager, Heather Keep, talks about how we are keeping Clients stimulated and engaged during isolation.
“With many of our Clients self-isolating or shielding, we wanted to put a useful resource together for our care teams to keep Clients mentally stimulated but also to lift spirits and have some fun.
“We put together a jam-packed activity book which is filled with creative ideas for our CareGivers and Clients to do together during care visits.
“The book is split into three sections with various ideas for baking, quizzes and games and arts and crafts, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. It also includes activities specifically tailored for people living with dementia.
“Just one example from the activity book is a quiz where Clients match up famous husband and wife duos from times gone by, for example, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
“We are also encouraging our offices to link up with local schools and other organisations. For example, pupils at a local primary school designed cards and other goodies for a Client of Right at Home South Liverpool who is in isolation. The Client and her daughter were so delighted, they both wrote back to the pupils a couple of days later, thanking them for their kindness. The pupils are all children of key workers and they have since created more cards and crafts for Clients of Right at Home.
“We know the effects that both boredom and loneliness can have on our mental health and wellbeing, so we are also sharing ideas for activities during isolation through our online #ActivitiesAtHome campaign. Using our social media channels, we are providing step-by-step guidance and ideas for staying entertained at home, which are fun for all ages.”
Here is Right at Home Bournemouth and Poole Client Flo completing one the activities.
Her CareGiver, Natalie, said: “I made a collage with Flo today and played a ‘match the suits’ card game from the activity book. We also had a Frank Sinatra sing along! New York New York, My Way and Fly Me to the Moon. What a lovely hour we had.”
